I had wondered whether Spanish 'hay' and French 'il y a' were derived the same way - a combination of third person singular from the verb 'to have' ('ha' and 'a') and 'y'.

Is that completely wrong?

Using of en or por for transport

hi, the last sentence says 'i like travelling by train'.

Why is 'viajar por tren' wrong? and when do we use 'en' for transport?

Subjunctive and Imperative

Hello,

I have had a lot of difficulty distinguishing between choosing whether a verb is in the imperative or subjunctive in some complex sentences.

Is there a clear way to determine this?

For example, I'm not sure which of the 3 categories in the lesson, this sentence I came across and failed to identify as subjunctive, would fall under:

"Al final será el consumidor quien pague la factura."

I would have used the present or imperative here more so. (Would it be possible?)

Request vs command and pronoun orderin the micro quiz, the option of “por favor Marta, les trae unas copas de vino” is considered incorrect. However, it could be a request rather than a command, using a more formal 3rd person Ud form, for example, where Marta is an older person than the speaker. I consider this option as possibly correct, and certainly NOT incorrect - it just doesn’t fit with the lesson very well, but that doesn’t make it wrong.

I'm not sure I understand why despierta is used here and not despierto (1st person conjugated)A veces espero a mi hija despierta hasta que llega a casa

Is it because despierta is being used as an adjective here? Thank you

Passive with "estar"?

It is possible, I believe, to form a [sort of?] passive with 'estar' - is it? … Do you have an exercise on that? (perhaps highlighting comparisons with the 'ser' passive).

DistanceI'm having trouble figuring out when a noun is "far from the speaker (medium distance) [ese, etc.]" and "a further distance from the speaker"? [aquel, etc] when "over there" can mean in a corner of a room and "far from the speaker" can mean two blocks away. Can you help?

Medio vs la mitad de

In the quiz asking for “half a sandwich”, I put “la mitad de un bocadillo” instead of “medio bocadillo” and was marked incorrect.

Is my answer in fact incorrect or just not what the answer was looking for? When we say “half a sandwich” in English, my understanding is that it is really shorthand for “half (of) a sandwich” and so I thought either “la mitad de” or “medio” would be correct - perhaps that is not true in Spanish?
