Question about singular vs. plural

I wrote "las velas son tambien ..." but the correction answer was "la velas tambien son ...". Upon re-listening to the recording various times, I feel pretty certain the readers say "las velas"; moreover it is following by "son". Did I hear wrong? What is the reason for the use of "la" and not "las" with "velas"?

Question about subjunctive

Hello, there is a section called "Variable Subjunctive" that has the sentence:

no tengo un profesor que viva en madrid

which means:

I don't have a teacher that lives in madrid.

My question is why would this be a subjunctive, it seems like what this person is saying is a fact that he knows that he doesn't have a teacher that lives in madrid. Or maybe he's trying to say that he doesn't have a teacher that he KNOWS OF. Idk I just want to know why it's a subjunctive. thank you

I was wondering if this is a story from Cervantes or a fairy-tale from the Grimms brothers?

Hola,

I think “les” is an indirect object pronoun in this phrase. I thought a direct object pronoun would be used because it is “we helped them.” We are the subject they are the direct object. Can you explain?

Hubo vs Había

Your translation of "There were many feminist movements" is given as "Hubieron muchos movimientos feministas" I had "Había muchos movimientos feministas". I can see why "hubo" would be preferred here, but I'm confused about "hubieron" Isn't the third person singular always used for "there was/were"?
