Can tele only take la in front of it even though there are masculine and feminine words for television in Spanish?

Is there a rule about when the "o" at the end of the 3rd person has an accent or not? It seemed that when "y" replaces the "i", there's no accent on the "o", but that doesn't work for oyó 

EDIT: maybe only after "j" replacement is the "o" without an accent?

What is wrong with "Teníamos que usar cascos de protección" . I have heard many people use "usar" for to wear.

Could you please help me with the decision process for which tense to use for questions like:

- The journey was difficult.

- It was easy to learn the language.

Most of the story is in preterito indefinido like I expected when telling about events that happened and concluded, but these two are in preterito imperfecto - is this because it can't be determined for how long they were broken/dirty (and that they may still be)?
