María no oye bien. Tiene un problema con sus oídos.

Hi,

I cannot understand why the plural of oído is used above.

I presume it's just the Spanish way because we have two ears.

Is  that right?

You've got it right! In Spanish, when referring to the sense of hearing, it's common to use the plural "oídos" because, as you mentioned, humans have two ears. So, saying "María no oye bien. Tiene un problema con sus oídos" is indeed the Spanish way of indicating issues with hearing. 

Nevertheless, it would also not be incorrect to use the singular "oído" to refer to both the organ and the bodily sense.
