I learned the hard way that I shouldn't try to reason it out.  Just use aun when there is a preposition.

aun con

aun sin

and even with the clause words, like the lesson says

aun si

aun cuando

Sometimes you just have to use tricks until you have a better understanding of the larger rule!

In the test, the sentence 'No es verdad que  ________ siempre los papeles al suelo.' gave the answer as 'tiremos', and marked 'tiramos' as incorrect. So does this mean that if you present something as true, you use the indicative, but if you say something is not true, or that the truth is a negative, you use the subjunctive? I thought, in saying it is not true, the sentence was presenting something as a fact, and therefore the indicative would apply. 

Miguel tiene una novia y tu tienes

demasiada ( incorrect answer).  The correct answer is demasiadas

Miguel has one girlfriend and you have too many.

Una novia is singular so why is my answer demasiada wrong.

Do we use' el que'  with subjunctive ?

can we only use "lo suyo" if it refers to something mentioned before? ie we cannot say "eso sería lo suyo" as a stand alone sentence?

To me this seems this would be  ongoing : that he held his breath while things were happening….

Could the imperfect be used as well in this case?
