Direct object pronouns replace things and people that directly follow a verb working as direct object, without a preposition.

Estoy comiendo pollo. - I am eating chicken.
Lo estoy comiendo. - I am eating it. (What am I eating? the chicken)

Ayudé a Carmen. - I helped Carmen.
La ayudé. - I helped her. (Who did I help? Carmen)
