Quiz question

"Suelo ir al gimnasio todos los días, ________ soy socio.

I usually go to the gym every day because I am a member."

One of the options here was "por". Is there a reason that would not be correct? It seems like "por" "que" and "porque" all mean pretty much the same thing.

Hola R

You could use "por" here only if the verb following is an infinitive. Remember prepositions are followed by an infinitive. So we could say:

Suelo ir al gimnasio todos los días, por ser socio.

I usually go to the gym every day because I am a member.

But porque is followed by a conjugated verb (porque soy socio)

Both por and porque introduce a causal clause but with a different structure. Have a look here
