Another case to add to the “el/la” list.

Another case to add to the “el/la” list.

“Normalmente cena con la familia por la noche.”  Not “mi familia”.

We’ve learned this usage for body parts and for articles of clothing. Is the usage the same with family members?  Do we say, “Los lunes almuerzo con la hermana”?  Thanks.

Hola Marcos y Luke

With family members, Spanish does not follow the same rule as with body parts or clothing. The use of el/la here is not because of possession, but because familia is being used in a general, non-possessive sense.

In a sentence like:

Normalmente ceno con la familia por la noche.

la familia means “the family” in general (your family as a unit), not specifically my family in a contrastive or emphatic way. Spanish often prefers the definite article when the context already makes possession clear.

If you want to emphasize whose family, then the possessive is used:

Ceno con mi familia cuando voy a visitarlos.
Ella cena con su familia los domingos.

With individual family members, it’s similar:

Los lunes almuerzo con mi hermana (most common)
Los lunes almuerzo con la hermana → this would sound incomplete or odd unless the context already specifies whose sister (e.g. previously mentioned).

So to answer your question directly:

  • La familia works naturally when speaking generally.

  • Mi familia is used for emphasis or contrast.

  • With singular family members, the possessive is usually needed unless the context is very clear.

Thanks for raising this. It’s a subtle point and you’re absolutely right to connect it to earlier lessons.

Best,
Silvia
