Why not "estuvo explicándole"?

Fernando ___ a Luisa... In another lesson you said that when naming the person, the "le, les" cannot be omitted. I used "estuvo explicándole" but the right answer is "estuvo explicando." Why? Thanks!

In this case, as explained in the lesson, it's optional as it is an indirect object using A + named person (a Luisa) and it's placed after the verb  (estuvo explicándo[le] a Luisa), not before the verb. To avoid confusion, I included the pronoun in the text question and placed it before the verb: "Fernando le estuvo explicando a Luisa..."
