and collects the post [US: mail]     the post????  I didnt know what was meant as post.....   mail, postcard, letter.... right there it could of been three different words.

Post is British English for mail.  So in UK post includes all mail as you said-letters, post cards etc.

Also, before doing a writing challenge we encourage students to have a first read of the whole text so you know what it's going to be about.
