Question about punctuation

Can anyone explain why the following answer options are all punctuated with a semicolon?  Is this the correct use of a semicolon in Spanish?  In English, it would be a comma instead of a semicolon.

Hola Amy,

this is the answer using a semicolon:

Estás muy pálido; como si estuvieras enfermo.

You are very pale, as if you were ill.

In Spanish we can use a semicolon when we consider there is a long pause (longer than with a comma)

Here is what the Spanish Royal Academy says about the use of the semicolon in Spanish:

R.A.E punto y coma

I hope this helps,

Saludos

Inma
