If so, why "for" in
"she has made many books for her children"
does not imply a cause?
Also, is the following ungrammatical:
"Ha hecho muchos sacrificios para sus hijos."

In your example, the use of both prepositions por or para is grammatically correct, but it depends on the nuance you want to convey.
Por indicates origin or cause, while para indicates purpose or the recipient of an action. In the case of your sentence with the sacrifices, if they are for a cause, we will use por, and if it's for a purpose or to indicate the recipient of an action, para.
