Hint for requiring informal “hubieras”

Si ________ en la entrevista, te habrían contratado. If you had lied in the interview they would have hired you.
Why is “hubiera (formal) mentido” wrong. What is the hint for using hubieras?

Yes, if the second clause said "lo/la habrían contratado", then you'd need the formal "hubiera mentido".
