English translations of prepositions with lo que

It is easier to think of the translations of these phrases in formal (or correct) English.

En lo que        As far as

Con lo que     with that which

Para lo que    for that which

de lo que       of that which

Por lo que      because of what

a lo que          to that which

And don't encourage bad English.  "You can never place the preposition at the end of the clause like in English:  Be careful what you wish for."  You should never end with a preposition in English  Be careful of that which you wish   or Be careful for what you wish.

Hola Douglas L.

Using more formal English equivalents like with that which” or for that which can indeed help highlight the underlying grammar of preposition + lo que, so your reasoning is understandable.

However, in our explanations we generally prioritise natural and commonly used English translations so that learners can easily relate them to everyday usage. Constructions such as that which are grammatically correct but quite rare in modern spoken English and they can sometimes make the explanation feel less intuitive.

Also, while traditional rules discouraged ending sentences with prepositions, this is perfectly acceptable in modern English and widely used by native speakers.

Thanks again for your thoughtful suggestion — feedback like this is always appreciated!

Un saludo

Silvia
