I figured out my confusion, please delete this question. I can’t find a button to delete it (which is silly).

Hola Rose W.

In Spanish, the word "durante" is a preposition that means during, and it is always followed directly by a noun or by el/la + noun when needed, it doesn’t combine with “de” to form a contraction like some other prepositions do.

That’s why the correct phrase is "durante el verano" and not "durante del verano". The word del is a contraction of de + el, but since “durante” doesn’t use “de” at all, we don’t need or use the contraction here.

Thanks for pointing it out, it’s a great observation!

Saludos

Silvia
