___ la mañana desayuno a las nueve.

I incorrectly answered "para" because there was a specific time of day in the sentence.  I am thinking that was not correct if this translates (loosely) as "sometime in the morning I eat breakfast at 9am".  So a/en/por would be correct for this?

Hola David

It's correct to say Por/En/A la mañana here as it is simply specifying a part of the day. I'm not sure why you got confused with "para" - could it be that you were thinking about the meaning of para for a deadline? as in for example "I need the documents by Monday" (Necesito los documentos para el lunes [no later]).
