Learn how to say one of/some of in Spanish

The indefinite adjectives alguno/alguna/algunos/algunas can be used as partitives (i.e. expressing a part of something) when used with de to say "one of/some of...":

alguno/alguna/algunos/algunas + de +noun/pronoun

 For example:

¿Te gusta alguno de mis vestidos? Do you like any of my dresses?

Me gustan casi todos tus vestidos; algunos de ellos son un poco sosos.I like most of your dresses; some of them are a bit bland.

¿Alguna de tus alumnas te ha regalado algo?Have any of your [female] students given you anything?

Algunas de nuestras compañeras de trabajo son un poco groseras. Some of our [female] colleagues are a bit rude.

Note that if we use it in singular we refer to "one" and if used in plural we refer to "some":

Algunas de nuestras compañeras de trabajo son un poco groseras. Some of our [female] colleagues are a bit rude.

vs

Alguna (una) de nuestras compañeras de trabajo es un poco grosera. One of our [female] colleagues is a bit rude.

The second example above is using "alguna" in singular to refer to one within that group; we could have also used "una de nuestras compañeras" instead. However using "alguna" means that you are less specific whereas using "una" normally implies that you are referring to one in particular.

Note that this partitive structure is often followed by a possessive:

algunos de sus amigossome of his/her/their/your (formal) friends

alguna de mis vecinasone of my neighbours

It could also be followed by a subject pronoun:

alguna de vosotrasany of you (plural feminine)

algunos de ellossome of them

Bear in mind that you always need a subject pronoun, not an object pronoun. This would be incorrect:

algunos de los/las/les/os/nos...

Here are some other articles and determiners that can also follow de:

algunas de estas manzanassome of these apples

alguna de las películasone of the films

algunos de los profesoressome of the teachers
