Take the fastest path to fluent Spanish

The prepositions entre (between/among) and según (according to) can both be followed by pronouns.

Notice how for all cases, the pronouns used after "entre" and "según" are subject pronouns:

  • yo
  • él/ella
  • usted/-es
  • nosotros/-as
  • vosotros/-as
  • ellos/-as

This would be incorrect:

  • Entre  y ti hubo mucha conexión.
  • Hubo mucho amor entre nos.
  • Según ti, el gimnasio es demasiado caro.

Important:

Bear in mind that entre and según do not follow the general rule for prepositions that are followed by a pronoun (for example "para mí""a ti""por él", etc). The general rule is that they use  and ti for me and you (i.e. not yo and ) but then go on to use subject pronouns (i.e. él, ella, usted, ustedes, nosotros, nosotras, vosotros, vosotras, ellos, ellas). See Using prepositions a, para, por, de, en, sin, hacia, sobre followed by a pronoun.

Entre sí

You may also find "entre sí" when we mean "mutually" or "to each other". In this case it will be used when talking about more than one person/thing. For example:

Las piezas estaban conectadas entre sí.The pieces were connected to each other. [lit: between them]

Los chicos se entendían entre sí de una manera especial. The boys understood each other in a very special way.

Note that here  is a personal pronoun and it needs a written accent.
