Joaquín Sorolla is a Spanish painter from Valencia (1863-1923). His most famous paintings show people and landscapes in dazzling Spanish sunlight. He started painting at a young age, with several paintings from his adolescent years exhibited in the Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes in Madrid. When he had completed his military service he obtained a grant that permitted him to study painting in Rome. He also spent time in Paris before returning to Spain. Despite living in Madrid he returned often to his native Valencia and his beach scenes constitute some of his most celebrated works. After he died, his wife left many of his paintings to the state and these paintings form the basis of the collection in the Museo Sorolla, which is located in the artist’s Madrid home.
