Use estar to talk about dates, days of the week and seasons (colloquial)

Colloquially, we use the verb estar to say what the date or season is. It is generally used in the present tense and always with the nosotros conjugation: "estamos".

Dates and days of the week

Hoy estamos a cuatro de enero.
Today is the 4th of January.

Estamos a ocho de marzo de 2018.
[Today] it's 8th March 2018.

Estamos a jueves.
It is Thursday [today].

Estamos a viernes.
It is Friday [today].

Notice how in all the examples above the preposition "a" follows estamos.

Note that when saying what today's date or day of the week is, we don't need to add the word "hoy" as it is implicit in the use of estamos, i.e., it can only refer to "today".

You can also use estar to ask what today's date is:

¿A qué día estamos?
What day is it today?

Estamos a martes, dos de mayo de 2019.
It is Tuesday, May 2nd, 2019.

Seasons

Ahora estamos en verano.
It is summer now.

¿Por qué llevas una camiseta de manga corta? ¡Estamos en invierno!
Why are you wearing a short-sleeve T-shirt? It is winter!

¡Qué bien! ya estamos en primavera.
Great! It is already spring.

Carlitos, hay muchas hojas en el suelo porque estamos en otoño.
Carlitos, there are lots of leaves on the ground because it is autumn.

Notice how when talking about seasons we use the preposition "en" after estamos

Use:

estamos a + date, day of the week

estamos en + season

The use of estar, instead of ser, to talk about dates and seasons is more colloquial. See also Using ser (not estar) to talk about time, days, dates and seasons for a more basic, general and formal use.

El uso de estamos

When you say "colloquially", is it a less formal/ slang-like way to use it?

And which region is it used?

Hola Alyssa,

using this sentence:

Estamos a 27 de noviembre.

Today is 27th November.

is less formal than saying:

Hoy es 27 de noviembre.

Today is 27th November.

in the sense that the second is the most "standard, formal and literal" way to say it, and the first one using "estamos a" would be more informal and idiomatic.

But both can be said in any context and situation. You could use both when talking to a friend, and you could say both when you are in a more formal/serious situation, e.g. a meeting with clients.

I hope this helps,

Saludos,

Inma

El uso de nosotros

¿Se usa "nosotros" para decir "today is ..." en todo el mundo hispano, o solo en españa?

Hola Pati,

I am pretty sure it is also used in at least some Latin American countries, like Mexico and Colombia. I don't know for sure if it is used in the whole Latin America though.

Months - do we use 'a' or 'en'?

Hi, do we use 'a' or 'en' for months?  eg Which month is it now?

Hola Huw,

For months we say when asking:

¿En qué mes estamos?

Which month is it [now]?

Answering to this question you'd say:

Estamos en marzo.

It is March.

You'd use "a" when specifying the date, but not when you only say the month.

Estamos a 15 de marzo.

It is March 15th.

I hope this helps.
