Artículo cero o ausencia de artículo

Spanish Zero Article

The "zero article" is the classification for phantom articles, when nouns are used with no article at all.

In English, the zero article is extremely common:

  • I love [*] beer.
  • Politics are interesting.

In Spanish, definite articles are required in these sentences:

  • Me gusta la cerveza.
  • La política es interesante.

There is one common case where an indefinite article is required in English but not in Spanish: when talking about someone's profession or another descriptive noun.

  • Él es fontanero. - He's a plumber.
  • Ella es estudiante. - She's a student.
