In this case, it is not a direct translation from English, and the definite article "la" is needed. This is used in most cases where it is not used in English. For example,
in English you would say "I like art", but in Spanish you would say "Me gusta el arte". Another instance is with telling time. You would said "It is 8 o'clock." in English, but in Spanish it would be "Son las ocho".
The opposite can also be true. When talking about occupations, for example, in English we say "I am a lawyer", while in Spanish you say "Soy abogado/a" without the definite article.
This means you have to be careful not to directly translate from one language to another, since they have different syntax.
