Why irse not ir?

Él se fue de acampada con sus amigos ________ en casa tranquila. He went camping with his friends while I studied at home quietly. Hi, I’m confused about se fue here. Does it mean he went AWAY camping? rather than he went camping? Thanks, Shirley.

This is using the "se aspectual" where the action is emphasised and it generally conveys more involvment in the action by the subject.
