In Spanish, hay is used for both “there is” and “there are”. Unlike English, it does not change between singular and plural.
You can tell whether it means “there is” or “there are” by looking at the noun that comes after it:
Hay un libro en la mesa. = “There is a book on the table.”
Hay muchos libros en la mesa. = “There are many books on the table.”
So hay always stays the same — the noun tells you whether it is singular or plural.
