Test question about when to use estar and ser

There was a question in the test where the correct answer was:
´Las islas canarias SON en el oceáno atlántio´

Why is it ´SON´ and not ´ESTÁN´?

I think you may have misread the feedback for that question. The correct answer in the system is "están". "Son" is set as incorrect.

I don't know spanish, but I would expect it to be son because that location is permanent, not temporary.
