subjunctive with the same subject

subjunctive with the same subject

Hola Inma,

Ayer me cobraron de más en ese bar, _conque_______ dudo mucho que vuelva a ir.

They overcharged me in that bar yesterday, so I very much doubt I will return.

This sentence is from a test a took here. Dudo and vuelva have the same subject, yo. Is there a rule for this? I thought, in order to use the subjunctive, there must be different subjects. Can you, please, explain?

Muchas gracias

Hola Ελισάβετ

I went back to the lesson where we had a note by the end saying that for the same subject you can't use que + subjunctive but you use the infinitive instead; however I've revised that because it doesn't happen with all verbs. The note has been deleted from the lesson until we can clarify this a bit more.

With dudar you can actually use que + subjunctive even when having the same subject - in fact, it is quite common. It is actually more common to hear something like:

Dudo que vaya/pueda ir a la fiesta.

If we say Dudo ir/poder ir a la fiesta, this would sound a bit more forced/formal.

I will look into it a bit more and see if we can add more information to that lesson related to this.

Saludos

Inma

Hola Inma,

me encontré con otro ejemplo:

Podría comprarme ese coche cuando _terminara_______ de pagar el préstamo.

Espero que te haya ayudado con tu trabajo tan dificil ... y que no haya hecho muchos errores.

¡Feliz año nuevo!
