Similarity with Ponerse a hacer algo

Hi,

Is this form the same as ponerse a hacer algo - as both lessons mention the inferred spontaneity in the decision.

For example could we say, 'me puse a limpiar la cocina ayer' and 'me dio por limpiar la cocina ayer' have the same meaning?

Thanks in advance:)

Hola Jordan

While "ponerse a hacer algo" and "me dio por hacer algo" share similarities in expressing a certain spontaneity or inclination, they are not perfect synonyms. Some nuances differentiate them.

"Ponerse a hacer algo":

This expression often implies starting to do something or engaging in an activity. It signifies a more deliberate action, as if one is actively deciding to begin a task.

Me puse a estudiar para el examen. (I started to study for the exam.)

"Me dio por hacer algo":

This expression suggests a sudden impulse or a change in one's usual behavior. It conveys the idea of being struck by a desire or motivation to do something without necessarily planning it.

Me dio por aprender a tocar la guitarra. (I suddenly felt like learning to play the guitar.)

While there is overlap in their usage, the choice between them can depend on the specific context and the nuance you want to convey.

"Ponerse a hacer algo" emphasizes a conscious decision to start an activity, while "me dio por hacer algo" emphasizes a more impulsive or unexpected inclination.

I hope this explanation helps you better understand the differences.

Feliz domingo

Silvia
