In this case, with this meaning of "continuity of an action" the option with "se quedó" is the one. If you drop the "se" it'd sound unnatural or maybe a little bit "poetic". Your sentence has the same nuance as explained in the lesson: "to carry on doing something".

do you mean that "Patricia se quedó preguntándose dónde estaría su hijo." with double "se" is the most natural?
