For the given sentence "Ellos __ mucho." (They were laughing a lot), you are asked to conjugate "reír" in the Imperfect Progressive/Continuous form.
The correct answer is "estaban riendo". However, the reflexive form "riéndose" is also grammatically correct and commonly used, so "estaban riéndose" is also acceptable.
