Qué de + noun for exclamation about the quantity

Is this expression used only in Spain? I cannot find more information about the usage of this idiom. My teacher has not heard of this either.

Hi there Katrina !

My Grammar book (by Butt and Benjamin) describes it as "a rather old-fashioned alternative for 'cuánto' in exclamations".

So - you will perhaps not hear it all that often in Hispano-America.

Hola Katrina

This expression is also used in Latin America, maybe not in all Latin American countries but some of them.

I don't consider this structure as a "rather old fashioned" version of cuánto in exclamative sentences. I think it is actually more colloquial and very commonly used.

Saludos
