Qué de + noun for exclamation about the quantity

Is this expression used only in Spain? I cannot find more information about the usage of this idiom. My teacher has not heard of this either.

Hi there Katrina !My Grammar book (by Butt and Benjamin) describes it as "a rather old-fashioned alternative for 'cuánto' in exclamations".So - you will perhaps not hear it all that often in Hispano-America.

This expression is also used in Latin America, maybe not in all Latin American countries but some of them. 
I don't consider this structure as a "rather old fashioned" version of cuánto in exclamative sentences. I think it is actually more colloquial and very commonly used.
