We sometimes use that "que" in indirect speech using preguntar when it is followed by a why, when, how... but you can omit it too, so you can say:

Me pregunta que por qué quiero ir a Marte.
Me pregunta por qué quiero ir a Marte.

Other examples could be;

Me preguntó [que] cuándo llegaba Mario.
She asked me when Mario was arriving.
Te estoy preguntando [que] cómo haces tú ese pastel.
I am asking you how you make that cake.
