Infinitive not acceptable?

Question

ln the present tense version of this lesson we learned that we could use the infinitive (sometimes) by dropping the "que". (The "sometimes" was not really explained, but I think one of the users may have clarified it in the comments.) Are we to infer from its omission in this lesson that we cannot similarly use the infinitive when the first clause is in the pretérito?

yes, you can also use the infirnitive after the verb that is suggesting or recommending when they are conjugated in past tenses:

Le recomendé que fuera al médico.
Le recomendé ir al médico.
Nos aconsejaron que esperáramos unos meses.
Nos aconsejaron esperar unos meses.

This will be added to the lesson.
We say "sometimes" the infinitive is used meaning that you can use the structure with "que + subjunctive" or the structure with "infinitive". We don't go into detail because the lesson is focused on the structure using que + subjunctive. But both structures are equally correct.

Thanks! May I suggest not saying "sometimes" for things that are interchangeable because it makes it sound like certain condition or conditions must be met before a substitution can be made. Maybe "also acceptable" or "also permissible" instead?
