I don't understand why conservar is a better choice for this question than guardar. I thought that "conservar" was better for "keeping things in good condition" and "guardar" is better for "keeping things safe". Thanks!

In this context, however, both verbs are correct. It is common to see conservar fuera del alcance de los niños in instructions on labels and leaflets, but guardar fuera del alcance de los niños is also perfectly natural and grammatically correct.
Since both convey the intended meaning here, either option is acceptable.
