Julián y Alberto se respetan el uno al otro.
It is not quite clear if it is gender dependent or not. If two ladies respect each other or a man and a woman, will the reinforcement change?

Yes, there should be agreement (I'll extend the information in the lesson to reflect this, or will create a new lesson)
1. el uno al otro: used when two masculine subjects or one of each. For example:
Carlos y Antonio se ayudan el uno al otro.
Carlos y María se ayudan el uno al otro.
2. la una a la otra: used when two feminine subjects. For example:
3. los unos a los otros: same case as in 1. but plural. For example:
Los niños y los padres se ayudan los unos a los otros
Los niños y las niñas se ayudan los unos a los otros.
5. las unas a las otras; same as 2. but plural. For example:
