Why isn't it "aprender LA informática"? Is it because informática follows aprender?

With aprender (to learn) and estudiar (to study), when we are talking about learning or studying a subject, in Spanish the article is not used:

Estudio inglés en el colegio.

I study English at school.

Estoy aprendiendo informática en una academia privada.

I'm learning IT in a private academy.
