The lesson says to use "alguna" to mean "just the odd one" in an AFFIRMATIVE sentence, but in the question with the photographs the sentence is a question, not an affirmative statement . Can alguna be used in this sense in non-affirmative sentences as well?

We actually changed the wording in that bit of the lesson because it's not only in affirmative sentences that this nuance happens, it could also be in a question (when the reference has already been mentioned) so, yes, alguno/alguna could also mean "the odd one" in questions of this type:
Tienes muchas fotos del viaje, ¿puedo ver alguna?
You have lots of your trip, ¿may I see some/the odd one?
Pedro conoce a muchos famosos y me ha presentado a alguno.
Pedro knows lots of celebrities and he's introduced me to some/the odd one.
