A great piece of poetry

Question

A great poem in Spanish which should be enjoyed in Spanish. While the translation gives lots of new vocab (with poetic license) the true enjoyment is in the flow of Spanish and not in the clumsiness of an English translation!
But the concept of the subjunctive is different in English and is little understood by most anglófonos. For example:
Te di el dinero para que me dejaras en paz. - In the English subjunctive form "I gave you the money so that you should leave me alone."
Whereas to use "would leave me alone" should be in the conditional: "Te di el dinero para que me dejarías en paz.
Or are the two subjunctive concepts interpreted "differently" ?

Your second sentence wouldn't really be correct in Spanish using the conditional¨" ...para que me dejarías en paz". That would be a literal translation from the English "so you would leave me alone", but that doesn't work in Spanish because every time we use the subordinate clause starting with "para que..." we need the subjunctive - different tenses of the subjunctive are possible, depending on when the action takes place in the main clause. For example:
Te estoy dando dinero para que te compres unos pantalones nuevos. 
Te daré dinero para que te compres unos pantalones nuevos.
Te di dinero para que te compraras unos pantalones nuevos. 
Te había dado dinero para que te compraras unos pantalones nuevos.
But there is no conditional in the subordinate clause despite using it in the English:
I gave you money so you would / could buy some new trousers.
