Using todo to say everything or all (of it) (indefinite pronoun)

When todo is used as a pronoun, it means everything, the whole (of it) or all (of it). It also expresses an undefined quantity like Adjetivo indefinido.

Look at this table:

  Singular Plural
 Masculine todo todos
 Feminine toda todas
In Spanish the pronoun todo always agrees with the noun it replaces.

Now let's see how to use this pronoun!

1. Todo [masculine singular noun]

¿Vais a comer el pollo? - No, no lo queremos todo.Are you going to eat the chicken? - No, we don't want all of it.

El pastel estaba exquisito, aunque no lo hemos acabado todo.The cake was really tasty, although we didn't finish it all.

2. Toda [feminine singular noun]

La cocina ha quedado muy bien. La he redecorado toda.The kitchen has turned out very well. I have redecorated it all.

La tarta de cumpleaños estaba deliciosa y la he comido toda.The birthday cake was delicious and I have eaten all of it.

3. Todos [masculine plural noun]

Los árboles son importantes para el planeta. Todos son necesarios.Trees are important for the planet. All of them are necessary.

Mis amigos son muy inteligentes y todos trabajan en buenos puestos.My friends are very intelligent and all of them work in good jobs.

4. Todas [feminine plural noun]

¿Has recogido tus cosas? - Sí, las he recogido todas.Have you collected your things? - Yes, I have collected them all.

A todas las chicas les gusta la playa. - No, no les gusta a todas.All girls like the beach. - No, not all of them like it.

Note on todo and todos

Todo (masculine singular) can also replace a whole idea, or could refer to "everything" as in a group of things, but as a unit. For example:

  • Yo quiero verlo todo.  I want to see everything.
  • Todo me parece interesante.  Everything seems interesting to me.

Todos (masculine plural) can also mean everybody when it is used in the masculine plural form.

  • Todos quieren conocer al presidente.  Everybody wants to meet the president.
