As a neuroscientist, I've spent years studying how routine shapes the brain. What we do every day leaves a deeper trace than we tend to think. Each repeated gesture, however trivial it may seem, reinforces a neural circuit. It's what scientists have called neuroplasticity for decades. In other words, the brain literally reshapes itself based on what we do every day. However, not all routines have the same effect. Some strengthen our memory and others, on the contrary, dull it. Reading a few pages before going to sleep, for example, activates regions linked to imagination. Scrolling through social media for hours, on the other hand, fragments attention. What worries me most is the speed with which these habits become entrenched. In just three weeks, a repeated behaviour can become automatic. From that point on, the brain demands less effort to execute it. That's why we ought to choose our routines as if we were choosing who we want to become. In my lab, we've seen patients recover faculties that seemed lost. It was enough for them to introduce small daily disciplines for the brain to respond. In the end, our routine isn't just what we do: it's who we end up being.
