-Today we speak with Maya, a young woman who celebrates Kwanzaa every year with her family. She tells us what this holiday means and why it is so special to her. What is Kwanzaa?
-Kwanzaa is an African-American celebration that lasts seven days, from December 26th to January 1st.
-Why is it celebrated?
-It is celebrated to honor African culture, family and community values.
-What do people do during Kwanzaa?
-A candle is lit each day in a candelabra. Each candle represents a value, such as unity or collective work.
-What do you like most about this holiday?
-I like feeling connected to my roots and my community. Kwanzaa teaches me that solidarity and respect are fundamental.
