The Internet emerged in the year 1969 as a US military experiment. ARPANET, a computer network developed by that country, allowed computers to be interconnected via various telephone lines. The TCP/IP protocol was officially adopted in 1983, facilitating communication between heterogeneous global networks. In the late 1980s, the Internet began to expand to universities. In 1990, Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web and introduced HTML, URLs and the HTTP protocol as the basis for browsing. This democratized access to digital information and web browsers like Mosaic and Netscape established the standard for graphical browsing. In 1998, Google transformed the way we searched for data. Subsequently, the rise of social media changed human interaction, resulting in the rapid evolution of the Internet towards a more ubiquitous and participatory network. Today, the internet poses ethical, privacy and misinformation challenges, while its history continues to constantly redefine our society.
