CELU

Certificado de EspaƱol Lengua y Uso

The CELUCertificado de Español Lengua y Uso (Certificate of Spanish Language and Use) examination is officially recognised by the Argentinian Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is recognised by institutions in Spanish America, Brazil, Italy and China. CELU examination centres are present in South America, Europe, Russia, the Middle East and Asia.

When are the exams and what do they involve?

The examination dates are set by the examination centre and take place twice a year. The exam is in two parts, both of which are taken on the same day. There's a 3-hour reading, listening and writing exam, plus a 15 to 20-minute reading, listening and speaking exam.

How is the CELU graded?

There are two pass grades: Intermediate (equivalent to CEFR B2) or Advanced (equivalent to CEFR C1). Results are posted online 2 months after the examination.

Do I have to use a certain type of Spanish in the exam?

Although the certificate is awarded by an Argentinian institution, you do not have to use any particular variety of Spanish. For example you do not have to use the vos form if you are not familiar with it. However, you do have to know the difference between formal and informal registers and be grammatically correct and consistent. In the oral exam you must be able to communicate effectively with the examiner. Pronunciation, vocabulary, register and syntax of all varieties of Spanish are accepted.
