“Cuando el río suena, agua lleva”

a river and two women gossiping

This is a popular Spanish proverb used when you hear rumors or signs about something and suspect that there’s probably some truth behind them.

Cuando el río suena, agua lleva
Where there’s smoke, there’s fire
(Literally: When the river sounds, it carries water)

– Se rumorea que Marta y Juan están saliendo.
– Mmm… cuando el río suena, agua lleva.

– There’s a rumor that Marta and Juan are dating.
– Mmm… where there’s smoke, there’s fire.
