ya que

ya que

Hi, I know someone asked this question earlier, but still this "ya que" bugs me.

There must be some kind of difference in choosing between "ya que" and "porque".

Can you help me understand when to use which?

Thank you!

Hola Nicole,

the only difference between porque and ya que is that porque is a lot more common, and what we hear in everyday conversation, while ya que is more formal and less used in conversation (although you can still use it in conversation if you want to use a more formal register) and more used in written texts.

Saludos

Hi Nicole,

I didn't see the previous question around this so I hope I am not going over old ground. Ya que translated as "since" or "as" is very useful for more formal situations in English as Inma says.

It would often start the sentence for example "Since (As) you have ignored the directions of the judge, you fine will be increased." It is like another way of saying "as a consequence of......."

I don't hear it used very much any more but it does bring a lot of weight to a sentence when something formal is being discussed.

Saludos. John
