Why is the "a" omitted?

In the lesson these examples are given:
Ese hombre me recuerda mucho a mi padre. Tiene los mismos ojos.
That man reminds me of my dad. He has the same eyes.

La escena de amor en la película me recuerda a nuestra primera cita.
The love scene in the movie reminds me of our first date.

Both of these examples use "me recuerda a"

In the quiz:
El olor de esta comida ________ mi niñez.
The smell of that food reminds me of my childhood.

The answer is: me recuerda

Could you please explain why the "a" is omitted in this example?

Hola Ellen

In this case we added the hint saying "it conveys something is brought to her mind" to distinguish that from when it has the nuance of finding two things/people very similar. The omission of the "a" in the cases where it's simply bringing an idea to your mind is more common than adding the "a". The line is a fine line though.

Saludos
