Primero and tercero

Primero and tercero

"First and third before masculine singular nouns

Note that primero (first) and tercero (third) have a shorter form when they are placed in front of a masculine singular noun. " Then when are primero and tercero used, if ever?

I think these can be used as pronouns.

"Él es el primero." -- He's the first one.

"Es el tercero." -- It's the third one.
