Non-obvious Use of "de"?

" El martes hemos ido de tiendas."

 Is this how you say "went shopping", or "looked round the shops"??

Yes, for "going shopping" you can either say "ir de compras" or "ir de tiendas"; depending on the region you use one or the other, but they are both acceptable.
