Need help

I seem to be going around in circles with the following exercise.
________ afilada hacha. The sharpened axe.HINT: Bear in mind the adjective is in front of the noun
Can I assume La is the correct answer because the adjective is before the noun, but if it is without an adjective then it would be El?

Hola Jannice

Yes you assume well. The adjective placed before the noun makes the article feminine. If it was the other way round then you stick to "el":

La afilada hacha (all feminine when adjective in front of the noun)

El hacha afilada (masculine article in front of the noun)
