Hola Allison

The subjunctive is not possible in this sentence. You are simply "declaring" something when you say "Lo mejor de esta cita era que...". If you add an element of doubt to it, for example, you then could use the subjunctive, e.g "Quizás/Es posible que lo mejor de esta cita fuera que...."
