la oscuridad - las tinieblas

Instead of "... para ir a su puesto de trabajo en la oscuridad", would it be wrong to write .. en las tinieblas, or does it sound somehow absurd?

Hola Ελισάβετ,

they are synonyms, but "tinieblas" is used a lot more in literature and has a more of a misterious/poetic meaning than the more common word "oscuridad" which I would say it refers to simply "lack of light".
